Lamb Cook-Off

at the

4th Annual Iowa Sheep & Wool Festival

Dallas County Fairgrounds ~ adel, Iowa

June 15, 2008


   Official Rules

  • Limited to 20 (twenty) individuals or teams.
  • Entry form and deposit fee must be received no later than June 9, 2008. 
  • No entry fee - but a $50 deposit is required to guarantee entry. 
  • Deposit will only be refunded to contestants at the completion of and participation in the cook-off OR if the limit of 20 (twenty) contestants or teams has been reached when your entry and deposit are received at the Iowa Sheep Industry Association Office.
  • Boneless leg of lamb will be provided on Sunday morning to contestants at no cost.  If you wish to pick up your leg earlier arrangements can be made for you to pick it up at the Dallas County Fairgrounds on Friday, June 13th or Saturday, June 14th.  Make arrangements by calling Marsha  712-548-2884.    
  • In addition to being judged, the finished product will be sampled by spectators. 
  • Cooking may be done by means of charcoal, wood or gas.
  • Contestants shall provide all needed equipment, supplies, and ingredients. 
  • Contestants must adhere to all electrical, fire and other codes.  A fire extinguisher shall be near all cooking devices.
  • Set up may begin at 8 a.m. on June 15, 2008 in the specified area on the Dallas County Fairgrounds.  All cooking must take place on site between 8 a.m. and   2 p.m.  Judging will take place at 2 p.m.
  • Prize money will be as follows: 1st place, $300; 2nd place $150; and 3rd place, $75.
  • Judging will be based on taste, tenderness and appearance.  Scoring will be from 2-9 and the weighted factors will be 2.5 for taste, 1.5 for tenderness and .5 for appearance.
  • Sanitation & Food Handling Safety:   Cooks are to prepare and cook lamb in as sanitary a manner as possible.  Remember to use good food handling and preparation guidelines when preparing your products and meat thermometers should be used.  
  • The Iowa Sheep & Wool Festival is a family event with many youth participating and we require that no alcoholic beverages are to be consumed during the contest or distributed to fellow cook-off participants or the general public.
