Fiber Class Descriptions

 

Saturday, June 14, 2008 – 800 Numbered Classes

 

*SATURDAY 6-HOUR CLASSES (#800, 801 & 802)

9 AM – 3:30 PM (LUNCH 11:30 AMNOON. RESUME CLASS AT NOON)

 

#800 - Aran Knitting: Vicki Wickham, Norwalk, IA
Description of Class:  Learn the details of Aran construction of various cables and design by knitting a miniature Aran sweater, with cables and bobbles.
Students Bring: 3 oz. worsted weight yarn (LIGHT color) - Size 5 & 7 (US sizing) needles.  Either straight or circulars, tape measure and pins.
STUDENTS MUST BE ABLE TO CAST ON, KNIT AND PURL STITCHES, CAST OFF.
Class limit:  Min. 5  Max. 10

#801 - Introduction to Japanese Braiding:  Collyer Ekholm, Swisher, IA

Description of Class:  Why learn to do Japanese Braiding?  Because it is easy to learn, soothing to the mind and will use up a lot of your leftover yarn.  The braids can become jewelry or be used as trim on hand woven garments.  We will learn the basics of working on the marudai or round stand.
Students Bring: Nothing
Class limit: Min. 5  Max. 10

#802 - Wool Drying Basket:  Jeanne Dudley, Troy Mills, IA  Class #802 Cancelled by Instructor

Description of Class:  The students will weave a Wool Drying basket.  You may choose to weave with all natural reed or dyed reed may be used as an accent.  You will also use natural wool as an embellishment.  The basket will have some type of handle such as wooden, leather or reed.  The basket will also have legs on it.
Students Must Bring:  1). sharp scissors, 2) pencil & tape measure, 3) plastic bucket, 4) old towel, 5) plastic spritzer bottle for water sprayer.
Special Instructions: Wear old comfy clothes

*SATURDAY MORNING 3-HOUR CLASSES (#803, 804, 805, 806, 807, 808)

9 AM – NOON

#803 - Beginning Spinning:  DiAnn Boehm, Ames, NE
Description of Class:  Participants will be introduced to the basics of fiber preparation, hand spindling, spinning and plying on the spinning wheel to produce original hand spun yarn for use in fiber arts and needle crafts.
Students Bring:  Working spinning wheel, hand cards if you have them.
Special Instructions:  Come relaxed and ready to have fun!
Class limit: Min. 3  Max 10
Material fee: $15.00 spinning kit

#804 - Designing at The Wheel:  Vanessa Kessler, Sheboygan, WI.
Description of Class:  This class is designed to make you think outside of the box while creating unique yarns.  We start by learning through hand manipulation how to take solid color rovings, combining them and then creating beautiful variegated yarns where we control the color ways.  You will also learn some ways of adding those hand painted rovings along with the solids.  Both spinning regular weight yarns and those fun thick-thin yarns will be done, along with some spiral plying.  This class will explore a lot of color ways and tons of creative play.
Students bring: Spinning wheel in good working order, niddy noddy, and ball winder if you have one.
Class limit: Min. 3 Max. 15
Material fees:  $15.00 includes a variety of rovings.

#805 - Beginning Wet Felt - Mittens: Kim Specht,
Monticello
, IA.
Description of Class:  Students will learn the wet felting process as they felt a pair of mittens.  Wool preparation, use of color and finishing options will be discussed and demonstrated.
Students bring: A couple old towels and a bar of soap.
Class limit:  Min. 3 Max. 6

#806 - Beginning Rigid Heddle Weaving:  Darlene Megli,
Lamar, MO

Description of Class:  Have you wanted to try your hand at weaving, but didn’t know where to start or how?  Come join us in a rigid heddle class.  We will be using the RH loom, warping it, then weaving a small fabric than can be used for an i pod case, cell phone, mug rug, or just look at it!  I will bring looms all ready warped for each student to weave on except for 1 which we will warp in class.  RH weaving gives you a plain weave structure and is great for showing off fancy yarns, textures and color.  You will learn how to warp the loom, and then weave your project.
Students bring:  A pair of scissors.

#807 - Dwelves-Do You Believe? Make your own Wee People: Lou Anne Thompson,
Henderson, IA

Description of Class:  Using a combination of needle felting and wet felting, you will design and create your own Wee Person.  Your creativity will decide if you have a Gnome, Elf or Dwarf.  The “Wee People” may help you decide.  The overall height will be 4-5 inches.
Students bring: Enthusiasm and creativity
Class limit: Min. 3 Max. 15

#808 - Introduction of Tri-Loom Weaving:  Nancy Ahlborn, Bellevue, IA - Class #808 Cancelled by Instructor
Description of Class:  Learn basic tri-loom continuous strand weaving.  Students will complete one small triangle in the 3-hour session.
Students bring: nothing
Class limit:  Min. 3 Max. 5

Material fee:  $15.00 includes loom rental and supplies.

#809 - Painted Skeins - Wild & Crazy Colors:  Carol Wagner, Valders, WI
Description of Class:  Using microwave and simple dyes, students will learn a quick and easy technique to create designer yarns.  Skeins will be hand-dyed using multiple colors in this hands-on workshop, designed to inspire the color-lover in all of us.
Students bring: Rubber gloves, an apron and quart sized baggies.
Class limit: Min. 3 Max. 10
Material fee:  $20.00

#810 - Basic CSM (Circular Sock Machine): Donna Story,
Hawkeye, IA
Description of Class:  Basic Instruction on how to use a Circular Sock Knitting Machine.  Set up - adjust tension - knit a selvedge - knit a tube - turn a heel - knit a foot - knit a toe - EUREKA A SOCK!!
Students bring: CSM Machine – ready to use - OR contact
Margie Meehan 563-926-2573 and she will ask Bonnie Smola to bring machine and stand for you to use in class, *Arrangements prior to Thursday before Festival*

Bring yarn appropriate for your machine and the usual tools for your machine.

#811 - Heel Styles on the CSM(Circular Sock Machine):  Bonnie Smola, Monona, IA
Description of Class:  Students will use several different methods to knit Round heels, Scotch (Square) heels, and Sandal Heels.  While knitting the Scotch heel, both the Heel Stitch and the Pidgin stitch will be used.
Students bring: CSM Machine and appropriate stand OR contact
Margie Meehan 563-926-2573 and she will contact Instructor to bring machine and stand to use in class, *Arrangements prior to Thursday before Festival.* 

Bring yarns appropriate to your machine and the usual tools for your machine.

#812 - Add Pizzazz to Your Yarn:  Judy Crouch,
Aurora, MO

Description of Class:  Experiment with other fibers blended with wool.  Silk, soy silk, indigo, bamboo, synthetics and glitz.  Design your own specialty yarn and expand your horizons, when you knit, crochet, or felt.
Students bring: Spinning Wheel, hand cards
Special Instructions: Student needs to have firm grasp of spinning.
Class limit: Min. 3 Max. 10

#813 - Traditional Rug Hooking 101:  Karen Guffey,
Newton, IA

Description of Class:  Look to hook a small piece in the traditional way of rug hooking.  The students will have their choice of several patterns to choose from.  We will talk about dyeing the wool as well as how to hook.  This class can be enjoyed by almost any age group from the young early teens to grandmothers. The students will have the use of a frame and all of their wool will be stripped or cut for them before they leave the class.
Students bring:  Scissors

Knitting with Unspun Mawata Silk Hankies - Betty Shreeves, Lone Tree, IA

Description of Class: Learn to knit a lace scarf with unspun silk from a choice of patterns.  The course include ways to prepare the silk for knitting, special techniques to use while knitting this special fiber, and a short description of how to care for silk after it is knitted. Dyed silk hankies are provided.

Students bring: size 5 and 9 knitting needles.

#900 - Advanced Japanese Braiding: Collyer Ekholm, Swisher, IA

Description of Class:  Did you take a class on Japanese braiding on the marudai (round stand) and then think it was too simple?  The Takadai (on high stand) is not really complicated and it produces larger, more elaborate braids with texture, color and weave effects and pick-up techniques all possible.
Students bring:  nothing
Class Limit:  Min.5  Max. 5

#901 - Dyeing With Indigo & Natural Dyes: Kimberly Baxter-Packwood,
Ames, IA

Description of Class:  A traditional natural dye workshop working primarily with Indigo.  Students will each learn how to start their vats, and trouble shoot them, in addition to dyeing fibers, yarns and fabrics properly with indigo that will ensure long lasting color that will not crock off.  Over dyeing will also be taught.
Students bring:  Gloves, plastic bags (zip lock), containers (1 gallon or more) w/lids to take a portion of the dye bath home.  Yarn and fabric not straight fiber, as it might get felted by accident.
Two yards of fabric, can be cotton, wool or silk, and/or 8 ounces of wool yarn.  If students wish to bring more this is fine as well.  I will have other fibers/fabrics/yarns for students to work with as well.

*SUNDAY 4-HOUR CLASSES (#902, 903)

9 AM – 1PM

 

#902 - Beginning Rug Braiding: Terri Schaefer, St Croix Falls, WI
Description of Class:  Traditional Rug Braiding with wool fabric will be taught.  Students will learn how to make a round braided chair pad.  Techniques for making an oval, round and straight braided rug will also be reviewed. Students will receive written instructions.
Students bring: nothing
Class limit: Min. 5 Max. 10

Material fee: $50.00 (fee includes: braiding clamp, 1 yd Wool fabric, lacer, lacing thread, instruction. Instructor doesn’t believe in students purchasing items they may not need, so has not included the Vari-Folds.  Students are asked to try braiding first with out the use of Vari-folds. If needed instructor will have Vari-folds available for purchase for $17.00.

#903 - Beginning Weaving - A Chenille Purse:  Winnie Johnson, Elk River, MN   
Description of Class:  Learn the basics of weaving on Swedish “toy" two harness looms provided by instructor.  These looms may be toys but they are fully functional.  You will learn to warp them using a warping peg.  You will weave a piece of chenille fabric to make into a purse.  Add a lining, a strap and a button and to home with a finished chenille purse.  It can be elegant or casual.
Students bring:  1 Skein Lion Brand “suede” yarn for a solid color purse or 2 skeins in coordinating colors.
Class limit:  Min. 5 Max. 10

*SUNDAY MORNING 3-HOUR CLASSES (#904, 905, 906, 907, 908, 909)

#904 - Survey of Silk: Betty Shreeves, Lone Tree, IA

Description of Class: This class is a comprehensive survey of spinning different forms of silk, such as mawatta hankies/caps, tussah, bombyx, throwster’s waste.  In addition it will cover deguming silk, dyeing, reeling, blending with wool and exotic fibers, plus uses and care.  The materials fee covers a generous amount of each type of silk used.
Students bring: A spinning wheel in good working order, hand cards, scissors and knitting needles.
Class limit: Min. 4  Max 15
Material fee: $18.00

#905 - Finishing Knitting Techniques: Vicky Wickham, Des Moines, IA
Description of Class:  Learn how to improve the finish on knitted garments, including blocking and steaming, seam finishes (mattress stitch, 3-needle bind-off, kitchener stitch) and picking up stitches for necklines.
Students bring: Needles used to knit swatches, pins, darning needle and usual knitting supplies.
Special Instructions: Prior to class, each student should knit 6 swatches, cast on 20 stitches on size 7 or 8 needles using worsted weight yarn.  Knit each swatch about 3 inches cast off stitches on 2 swatches - leave 4 swatches on stitch holders.

#906 - Beginning Knitting:  Di Ann Boehm, Ames, NE
Description of Class:  Students will learn the basics of knitting starting with how to read a pattern, choosing yarn, choosing needles, casting on, how to do the knit stitch, how to do the purl stitch and binding off.
Students bring: Students can bring any acrylic yarn and knitting needles, but instructor will have some so they don’t have to purchase there.
Class limit: Min. 3 Max 5

#907 - Spinning woolen and worsted - Intermediate spinning class: Darlene Megli, Lamar, MO
Description of Class:  In this workshop we will talk about the difference in a woolen and worsted yarn, the best end use of them, and the best type of fleece to use in spinning them.  We will then learn to prepare and spin woolen, semi-woolen, worsted, and semi-worsted.  We will be spinning wool and some of the spinning will be with raw fleece.  We will ply the yarn and wash it so the student can see the difference in the type of yarn they have spun. 
Students bring: A spinning wheel, 3 bobbins, flick carder, hand cards, niddy noddy, lazy kate, wheel oil, small mini combs if desired, piece of heavy material for lap when flicking, and an old towel. 
Special Instructions: Must know how to spin and be comfortable using their wheel, have wheel well oiled and “tuned” and perhaps bring an extra drive band “in case”!
Class limit:  Min. 3 Max. 10
Material fees:  $20.00 (all fibers, handouts and tags will be provided)

#908 - Drop Spindling - The Basics:  Kim Specht,
Monticello, IA
Description of Class:  While students practice, we will talk about wool properties and preparation and the history and variety of spindles.  We will practice two methods of plying.
Students bring: Drop spindle if you have one, Kim will provide for use in class if you don’t.
Class limit:  Min. 3 Max. 8

Material fee:  $15.00

#909 - Painted Roving - It’s a Good Day to Dye: Carol Wagner,
Valders, WI

Description of Class:  Learn a technique to dye roving without felting it.  This simple microwave method will give hours of creativity and joy as you spin variegated yarns from your space dyed rovings.  
Students bring: rubber gloves, an apron and quart sized baggies.
Class limit:  Min. 3 Max. 10

Material fee: $20.00 (includes roving, dyes and all other materials used.

#910 - Exploring Surface Design/A Seasonal Scarf:  Vanessa Kessler
Description of Class:  In this class the student will use pre-dyed scarves and explore the use of enhancing them through foils, paint sticks, fusible Angelina, Etc.  Spring motifs will be used to create your own unique scarf.  Students will go home with a designer scarf of their very own.
Students bring: Scissors and cloth to iron on.  Optional: your iron, rubber stamps.
Class limit: Min. 3 Max. 12

#911 - Fantastic Felted Fiber Flowers:  Lou Anne Thompson, Henderson, IA
Description of Class:  Using a combination of wet and needle felting, adding wire and other embellishments, we will create three dimensional flowers, leaves and twigs that can be used in vases or as decorations.
Students bring: Ability to think out of the box.
Class limit:  Min. 3 Max. 15

#912 - Fun Beautiful Braids - 3 Ways!:  DiAnn Boehm,
AmesNE
Description of Class:  Students will have a blast learning 3 fun simple ways to make decorative braided cording.  Simple kumihimo loom, lucet, and Selentra or finger braiding for use as embellishments, drawstrings or jewelry
Students bring:       Nothing
Class limit:  Min. 3  Max. 15

#913 - Advanced Rug Hooking 201:  Karen Guffey,
Ames, IA

Description of Class: Advanced Rug Hooking for the student who has come experience.  We will work on more techniques as well as a choice of projects.
Students bring: Scissors
Class limit:  Min. 3  Max. 12

Material fee:  $45.00.  Instructor furnishes frame for class and all new wool.

#914 - Locker Hook a Book Mark:  Judy Crouch,
Aurora, MO

Description of Class:  Learn to Locker hook on a simple bookmark.  Once you have the technique you can go on to saddle blankets, chair pads, vests or whatever your imagination leads you to.
A fun simple class suited to all ages. 
Students bring: Nothing
Class limit:  Min. 3  Max. 10

Material fee:  $12.00 Instructor provides locker hooks and all supplies need to complete project.
