Methods of handling fleeces available to producers:

§  Fleeces entered in competition only.

§  Fleeces consigned for sale only.  

§  Fleeces entered in competition and placed for sale.

 

Fleece Standards:

§  Fleeces must be from the current (2009-2010) wool crop and represent no more than 15 months growth.

§  Each fleece must be clean, free of chaff, burrs, tags and second cuts, and must not have been processed in any way. 

§  Fleece must be skirted and in a clear plastic bag.

§  Fleeces must be pre-weighed; a scale will not be available at the time of registration. 

§  Any fleece judged to be excessively dirty will be disqualified. 

§  Producers are responsible for the accuracy of their entry forms.

§  Producers are urged to be selective in the fleeces they enter and reasonable in the prices they set.  The initial bid price for fleeces in the auction is to be set by the producer at registration.  

§  Upon registration a receipt will be issued to producer for fleece.  Fleece or payment for fleece, if sold in Fleece Silent Auction, will not be remitted to anyone without receipt.

§  A maximum of seven (7) fleeces per producer may be entered for competition and/or sale, with no more than two (2) fleeces in any one class. The same fleece may not be entered in more than one class. Anyone entering two or more fleeces must have one for sale.

§  The policy of the Festival is to be a broker, to make fleeces available to the spinners, and to provide a market for the producers.

 

Fees and Schedule

§  Entry fees are $3 per fleece entered for competition only.

§  Entry fees are $3 per fleece consigned for sale only.

§  Entry fees are $5.00 per fleece consigned for both show and sale.

§  Fleeces entered for competition, but not offered for sale, may not be removed from the exhibit prior to 1:30 pm Saturday, June 11.

§  Fleece competition winners must remain on display until 2:30 pm Sunday, June 12. 

§  Producers must remove unsold fleeces Sunday, June 12 between 2:30 and 3:30 pm 

§  Unclaimed fleeces become the property of the Iowa Sheep Industry Association (ISIA). ISIA will make every effort to display and care for the entered fleeces, but assumes no responsibility for damaged, lost, stolen or erroneously sold fleeces.

Fleece Competition

Division I: White Purebred Fleeces

Division II: White Crossbred Fleeces

Division III: Naturally Colored Purebred Fleeces

Division IV: Naturally Colored Crossbred Fleeces

Division V: Commercial Fleeces

Divisions I, II, III, IV, and V will each have classes A, B, C and D.

Classes:

A.         Fine: Spinning Count Grade 64’s to 80’s
B.         Medium: Spinning Count Grade 50’s to 62’s
C.         Coarse/Longwool: Spinning Count Grade 36’s to 48’s
D.         Double-Coated

 

Judging:

§  Fleeces will be judged on suitability for handspinning, with the exception of the Division V, which will be judged against commercial standards.

§  The judge reserves the right to 1) move fleeces to the appropriate class, 2) close or combine classes with insufficient entries, 3) give awards to quality fleeces only.

 

Premiums:

In each class -

1st - $5 with ribbon

2nd - $3 with ribbon

3rd - $2 with ribbon

Best of Show Award:  $25 and Rosette

 

Fleece Silent Auction

§  Following the Fleece Competition, fleeces not to be included in the Fleece Silent Auction are to be removed from the sale floor between 1:30 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. prior to the auction. 

§  The initial bid price for fleeces in the auction is to be set by the producer at registration. 

§  Iowa sales tax will be collected on all sales by seller of fleeces and will be the responsibility of the seller to remit to the Iowa Department of Revenue and Finance. 

§  Any fleeces with a bid over the initial bid set by seller must remain on the sales floor until the end of bidding on Sunday at 1:00 pm. 

§  A fleece may be removed from the sales floor at any time prior to a bid being placed, but registration fees are forfeited.

§  Bidders must fill out a registration form and will be given a bidding number.  Bidding will end at 1:00 pm on Sunday, June 12.  Bidders should check at the Fleece Sales Desk prior to leaving the Festival to determine whether theirs was the winning bid. 

§  The sale of the fleeces is between the seller and buyer.  Buyers’ checks will be made directly to the seller.  At registration, seller must provide a receipt to be given to buyer which an ISIA representative will fill out with sale price.  Checks will be mailed to seller if not present at the conclusion of the sale.  

§  Fleeces will not be shipped after the close of the Festival.  Unclaimed fleeces become the property of the Iowa Sheep Industry Association.
