· Reserve your spot by calling the Iowa Sheep Industry Association at (712) 790-6303.
· Maximum of 20 contestants or teams for the competition.
· Entry form must be completed prior to picking up meat. We will make that form available on Friday or Saturday as well.
· In addition to being judged, the finished product will be sampled by spectators. See People’s Choice Award.
· Cooking may be done by means of charcoal, wood or gas. A few electric outlets are available.
· Contestants shall provide all needed equipment, supplies and ingredients. Tables will be available for your use.
· Contestants must adhere to all electrical, fire and other codes. A fire extinguisher shall be near all cooking devices.
· Set up may begin any time after 9 a.m. in the specified area on the Dallas County Fairgrounds. All cooking must take place on site between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Judging will take place at 2 p.m.
· Prize money will be as follows: 1st place $300; 2nd place $150; and 3rd place $75.
· Judging will be based on taste, tenderness and creativity. Scoring will be from 2-9 and the weighted factors will be 2.5 for taste, 1.5 for tenderness and .5 for creativity.
· People’s Choice Award – Added in 2009! Votes will be cast by spectators/samplers. This will not be a monetary prize.
· Recipes will be made available to the Iowa Sheep Industry Association. Copies of recipes for spectators are desirable.
· Sanitation & Food Handling Safety: Contestants are to prepare and cook lamb in as sanitary a manner as possible. Remember to use good food handling and preparation guidelines when preparing your products and meat thermometers should be used.
· The Iowa Sheep & Wool Festival is a family event with many youth participating and we require that no alcoholic beverages be consumed during the contest or distributed to fellow cook-off participants or the general public.
· A $5.00 gate fee will be charged for admission to the festival on Saturday and Sunday.
